Men’s Basketball Begins UMAC Play Wednesday

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team will take a two-game win streak into league play Wednesday when it hosts Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-The Saints are coming off a thrilling 79-77 victory at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday.
-That marked the team's first win over the Blugolds in 18 tries and the first road win over a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) school since the season-opener of the 2008-09 season.
-Senior Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) had a big week, averaging 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game en route to being named the UMAC Player of the Week.
-That is the first UMAC Player of the Week honor for the Saints since the 2014-15 season.
-Freshman Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) averaged 15.0 points per game last week.
-Senior Sam Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored in double-figures in each of the last two games.
-The Saints committed a season-low eight turnovers on Saturday and have committed less than 10 each of the last two games.
-CSS shot a season-high 54-percent from the floor in Saturday's victory.
-The Saints lead the conference, making 43-percent of their 3-point attempts.
-Junior Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) leads the way in the conference, making 3.5, 3-point field goals per game and making them at a 45-percent clip.
-The Saints rank third in NCAA Division III, making 81-percent of their free throw attempts.
-Three of CSS' first five opponents have shot at least 50-percent from the field.

Record: 1-6, 0-0 UMAC
-After winning their season-opener over Finlandia University (Mich.), the Yellowjackets have dropped six straight.
-The last three losses have come against WIAC programs, including a 12-point loss at home to UW-Eau Claire last Wednesday.
-The Yellowjackets enter Wednesday 0-3 in road games.
-Montroy Scott ranks second in the UMAC, averaging 20.1 points per game.
-Scott also leads the conference, averaging 9.3 rebounds per game and has made a conference-best 16, 3-point field goals.
-The Yellowjackets rank second in the conference and 24th nationally in free throw percentage (.779).
-UWS has the lowest scoring average among UMAC teams at 60.0 points per game.
 
Series Record: UWS leads 34-17 (Last Meeting: 80-79 CSS – 1/31/2018)
 
Series History: The Saints have won six straight in the series, but two of the last three meetings at the Reif have been decided by one point. Last year, Newman made a free throw with 0.3 seconds remaining to seal the 80-79 victory.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints have an early season showdown with reigning conference champion and preseason favorite Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato on Saturday.
