Women’s Skiers Wrap Up Houghton Weekend with Skate Race

HOUGHTON, Mich. (csssaints.com) – For the first time this season, the St. Scholastica women's nordic ski team competed in a freestyle race, taking part in the 10km mass start on Sunday part of the Michigan Tech University CXC Cup.
 
Top Performances
For the second time in the first three races, junior Nicole Gilman (Manitowish Waters, Wis./Lakeland Union HS) led the way with an 18th place finish in a time of 32:57. Senior Greta Jenkins (Palmer, Alaska/Colony HS) was next to cross in 23rd place with a time of 33:36. Sophomore Samantha Benzing (Boise, Idaho/Boise HS) made it three Saints in the top 25, coming home 25th in a time of 33:45.
 
Michigan Tech's Sarah Goble continued her early-season success, coming home first in a time of 30:09.2, edging Northern Michigan University's Nicole Schneider by five-tenths of a second. The Saints had eight skiers competing on Sunday.
 
Up Next
The Saints will have skiers competing at the U.S. National Cross Country Ski Championships in Vermont, beginning on January 3. That will also be the first CCSA/NCAA point races of the year.
