DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell to the University of Minnesota Morris 61-41 after a slow start and a hard-hitting third quarter.
The Action
The Cougars (5-5, 2-1 UMAC) got the scoring started with a layup in the first 15 seconds of play, which contributed to an initial 15-3 run that left the Saints trailing. Down by 14 with two and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter,
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) sunk a three-pointer and a layup to lessen the Cougars' lead to single digits.
Going into quarter two, the Saints continued to chip away at the Cougars. A 10-2 run allowed St. Scholastica to come within one with just over seven minutes left in the half. Throughout the rest of the quarter, both teams scattered a couple baskets, but Morris emerged out on top with a 31-26 score going into the second half.
In the third quarter, the Saints were unable to maneuver around some strenuous defense from Morris. The Cougars held CSS to just three points while they tacked on 26 points to their lead.
With just one quarter remaining, the Saints were left with a 28-point deficit to overcome. Though they were able to hold the Cougars to just four points, the Saints, themselves, could only produce 12 points, allowing Morris the 61-41 victory.
