ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team blanked Northland College 3-0 Friday night with two third period goals, one of which was a power play. The Saints have recorded a power play goal three games in a row.
The Action
Both teams got off to an evenly matched start in the first period. CSS outshot the LumberJills on goal 9-7, and the game remained scoreless going into the second.
The Saints broke away in the second period. Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) assisted to Sam Gorecki (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic (Chicago Fury)) with seven minutes left in the second. Gorecki's first collegiate goal put the Saints on the board 1-0. The 1-0 tally carried over into the third.
In the third period, CSS added to their lead. Three minutes in, a penalty was called on the LumberJills. With 30 seconds left in the power-play, Taylor Murray (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) scored, cushioning CSS' lead to 2-0. It was Anderson and Thompson again with the assists.
The third and final goal for CSS was scored by Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS), with help from Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) and Anderson.
Notable Performances
Klaas led the Saints with six shots on goal. Murray and Nundahl each recorded five.
CSS goaltender Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) saved 27 of 27 shots she faced. This is her second shutout in as many games. Northland's goaltender Gabby Suhr stopped 32 of 35 shots on goal.
