DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team spotted Northland College two goals before scoring six unanswered to cruise to a 6-2 victory Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
First Period
Northland (0-4-0, 0-4-0 NCHA) had success in the first period, scoring twice. The first goal came five minutes into the game and the second was scored midway thru the period, putting the LumberJills in the lead 2-0 going into the second. The goals were the first of the season for Northland.
Second Period
The Saints turned things around in the second period, scoring three goals in the second half of the period. With eight minutes left in the period, a penalty was called on the LumberJills for tripping. CSS took full advantage of the power-play, with Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) assisting Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS). Thompson's first goal of the season lessened St. Scholastica's deficit to 2-1.
Thompson's second goal of the game came minutes later on another power-play, with Anderson and Taylor Murray (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) on the assists to tie the game 2-2.
The Saints took their first lead with eight seconds left in the period. Katie McKinzie (Saginaw, Minn./Duluth Marshall School) and Hailey Raske (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) assisted Anderson this time to make the score to 3-2 going into the third period.
Third Period
The third power-play goal was scored eight minutes in by Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS), with the assist from Kennedy Houge (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray HS).
Now up 4-2, the Saints tried to keep the momentum going. A penalty was called on CSS for holding, but Anderson and Sam Gorecki (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic (Chicago Fury)) were able to pass to Klaas to score a short-handed goal.
With two minutes left in the period, Paige Forsman (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) and Giorgia Battisti (Bolzano, Italy/Rice Memorial HS (Vermont)) assisted Amber Tilander (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS). Tilander's third goal of the season raised the final tally to 6-2.
Notable Performances
Battisti lead the Saints with seven shots on goal. Klaas recorded six, while Thompson tallied five.
Anderson scored four points this game, and now leads the Saints with 10 points.
CSS goaltender Lori Huseby (Babbitt, Minn./Northeast Range HS) saved 22 of 24 shots she faced. Northland's goalie Gabby Suhr stopped 32 of 38 shots.
