Women’s Hockey Comes Up Short Against #6 Adrian

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica women's hockey team fell 5-3 to sixth-ranked Adrian College (Mich.) at Mars Lakeview Arena on Friday night in a battle of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) unbeatens.
 
First Period
The teams were evenly matched in the first period, each forcing the others' goalie into seven saves. Adrian (6-0-1, 5-0-0 NCHA) opened the scoring with nine minutes and four seconds left on the clock through a goal by Sydney Daversa. CSS tied the game two minutes and 45 seconds later, thanks to a goal by Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)). Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) was credited with the assist.
 
But the Bulldogs took the lead once again with over a minute left in the period to head into the second period with a 2-1 advantage.
 
Second Period
Early on in the second, the Saints went on the power-play, but were unable to capitalize on the advantage. 58 seconds later, Adrian extended its lead to two goals after Kenzie D'Ascenzo made it 3-1.
 
With nine minutes to go in the period, the Bulldogs made it 4-1.
 
But with four minutes remaining, Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) pulled a short-handed goal back for the Saints to make it 4-2. Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) was credited with the assist. Less than a minute later, CSS pulled another back after Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Giorgia Battisti (Bolzano, Italy/Rice Memorial HS (Vermont)) set up Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) to cut the Bulldogs' lead to one goal.
 
Third Period
The Saints piled on the pressure in the third, firing seven shots at goal. With a minute remaining in the game, CSS pulled its goalie in search of an equalizer. But Adrian was able to capitalize 27 second later on the empty net to make it 5-3.
 
Notable Performances
Klaas led the Saints in scoring with two goals.
 
Tory Harshman led Adrian with four points.
 
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) stopped 21 of the 25 shots she faced in goal for the Saints. Kate Turner saved 11 of 14 for the Bulldogs.
