Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to Titans

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team opened its season with a 71-44 loss against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday night in the UWEC Tip-Off Classic.
 
How it Happened
The Titans (2-0) opened up with a 19-7 lead in the first period over the Saints to begin the night. Mariah Pearson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) made quick work with a layup in the opening seconds of the second quarter. Though, with seven minutes left of the half, Oshkosh initiated a 12-0 run to leave the Saints trailing by 22 points. The Saints scattered five points in the final four minutes of the half but would enter quarter three trailing 38-16.
 
Within in the first couple seconds of the second half, the Titans stole the possession from the Saints and added two more points to their lead. The Saints promptly responded with four points of their own with jumpers from Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) and Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS). However, Oshkosh would only add to its 20-point lead throughout the rest of the half to eventually grab the 71-44 win.
 
Top Performers for CSS
Pearson and Amber Smith (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS (Itasca CC)) led the Saints with nine points apiece off the bench, while Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) added eight. Maddy Halley (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) led the team with five rebounds.
 
Top Performers for the Opponent
Melanie Schneider had 16 points for the Titans and Erin Vande Zande added 10 to the mix.

The Saints will stay in Eau Claire to take on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday with a 5 p.m. tip-off.
