MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team was defeated in three sets by Augsburg University in Minneapolis on Friday night.

How it Happened
After scoring first on the night, Augsburg (17-3, 4-2 MIAC) was able to use its offensive line to make an early 6-0 run, handing the Saints a 7-1 deficit.  However, St. Scholastica was relentless, trading nearly every other point with the Auggies until mid-set when the Saints came within four led by an Emily Udermann (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) kill and a Kelsi Rippberger (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) ace to make a 12-8 score.  Though, that would be the closest they would come to closing the gap as the Auggies went on an 8-1 run to eventually win the set 25-12.

The second set held promise for the Saints as they used a 10-4 run led by a pair of kills from Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) and two aces from Rippberger. This produced a score of 14-10, giving St. Scholastica its first multi-point lead of the night.  After a vicious six-point battle, the Auggies responded with a 9-4 run of its own to take a 22-21 advantage.  After a couple scrappy plays, Augsburg took the second set 25-23.

Augsburg jumped out to a 10-2 lead to commence the third set.  As play continued, the Auggies would not let the Saints within eight points for the remainder of the game, ending the night with a 25-9 set for the sweep.

Top Performers
Rippberger topped two categories for the Saints with 10 assists and three aces.  Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) tallied seven kills on the night while Emily Bounds (Hill City, Minn./Hill City HS) added six.  Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) had a team-high 14 digs.
