DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica volleyball team was blanked 3-0 by 15th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wednesday night at the Reif Gym.

The Action
The first set was close between the Blugolds and the Saints. In the first set, Eau Claire got the first two points, but Sofia Rajala (Deer River, Minn./Greenway HS) got the Saints going off a kill. Down 2-1, the Saints quickly switched the lead and was up 4-2. The Saints kept their slight lead until the Blugolds tied up the game 7-7 with an ace.

Eau Claire maintained their slight lead, at most leading by five points. With the Blugolds up 24-19, the Saints made a last minute rally, scoring three points in a row, but this was not enough to take the lead. Eau Claire won the first set with a 25-22 score.

In the second set, the Blugolds quickly took the lead. A kill by Tatum Swanson (Carlton, Minn./Wrenshall HS) tied up the set 3-3, but a kill from UWEC gave the Blugolds the momentum they needed. With a rally of three final points, Eau Claire triumphed, winning the second set 25-17.

The Saints also struggled in the third set. Tying several times, the Saints would not take the lead until an attack error from the Blugolds gave the Saints a slight edge of 8-7. After tying five more times, the Blugolds took the lead. The Saints had a late three-point rally, but UWEC had the edge, winning the final set 25-20.

Top Performers
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) led the team in kills with 12. With assists, Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) recorded 13, while Kelsi Rippberger (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) followed close behind with 12. Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) lead the team in digs with 11.
