Volleyball Swept in Both Triangular Matchups

Notables
-Rajala notched her 100th career kill vs. Minnesota-Morris
-Schermann has led the Saints in kills in seven-straight matches

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team (8-16, 6-7 UMAC) lost both matches in a home triangular Saturday against Minnesota-Morris and St. Olaf.

Match One
Minnesota-Morris (16-10, 11-3 UMAC) was able to capitalize on CSS errors to get the sweep, but not without multiple comebacks from the Saints to stay in the match.

Set one handed the first three points to the Cougars, but the Saints answered with kills from Emily Bounds (Hill City, Minn./Hill City HS) and Tatum Swanson (Carlton, Minn./Wrenshall HS) to prevent UMM from gaining a big lead.  The teams then split nearly every other point until mid-set when Burns and Schermann stepped up with two crucial kills to bring the set to a 14-14 tie.  The Cougars then went on a 6-2 run that produced a deficit the Saints could not come back from, as Morris would go on to win the set 25-21.

Once again, set two opened with a large amount of back-and-forth play, both teams capitalizing on errors from the other side of the net.  Near the end of the set, the Cougars were able to pull away after a 9-3 run.  Five of those points were due to errors from the Saints.  UMM would maintain their lead and take the second set 25-15.

Unlike the first two sets, the third commenced with an early 6-2 run followed by another 7-2 run from Morris as the Saints were unable to defend their attacks.  However, the Cougars offense began to slip up, and CSS went on an 11-1 run of its own to generate a tie set at 20 points each.  Hitters from each team battled back-and-forth for the next four points to bring the score to 22-22.  Morris was able to slip away after two aggressive attack errors from the Saints and a game-ending kill to take the set 25-22 and get the sweep.

Top Performers
Schermann and Swanson led the match with eight kills apiece.  Kelsi Rippberger (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had a team-high 14 assists, while Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) added 12.

Match Two
The Saints continued with another match that consisted of continuous battles for points against St. Olaf (19-15, 4-3 MIAC).

The match commenced with a kill from St. Olaf, followed by two attack errors on the Oles' half of the court, giving the Saints a 2-1 lead.  The teams continued to exchange points nearly every other play before the Oles went on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 16-12.  The Saints came right back with a 6-1 run of their own led by a kill and an ace from Schermann and a kill from Udermann to tie the game at 19-19.  St. Olaf's front line went to work with a 6-3 run to take set one, making the final score 25-21.

The Oles began set two with a 3-0 lead that they would maintain for the rest of the set.  However, the Saints would battle to stay close behind. Down by four towards the end of the set, an ace from Austvold and an error from St. Olaf put St. Scholastica within two points, 23-21.  In spite of this, the Oles were able to produce two kills to put an end to the second set at 25-21.

Set three provided St. Olaf with an instant 5-1 lead.  The Saints were unable to answer, scoring no more than two points in a row for the rest of the set.  The Oles would go on to win set three 25-12 for the sweep.

Top Performers
Schermann produced eight kills in the match, while Rajala and Bounds tallied seven apiece.  Austvold had a team-high 16 assists and Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) supplied 15 digs.
