DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team defeated Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday afternoon when it scored three third-period goals to pull away from the Falcons to win 5-2.
The Action
The first period saw one goal from each side. The first came unassisted from Denisa Lalikova (Puchov, Slovakia/Proctor Academy, N.H.) with less than two minutes left in the period. The Falcons tied it up thirty seconds later, on a goal from Jossa Danis to make the score 1-1. Each team had a power play opportunity in the period, but neither team was able to score. With less than thirty seconds left in the period, CSS was called for a penalty, then four seconds later the Falcons put a player in the box for checking, making it a four-on-four matchup for the remainder of the first period.
Thirty seconds into the period, the Falcons were called for another penalty, adding a second player to the box where a CUW skater was already serving the remaining time of the penalty from the first period, giving the Saints a four-on-three player advantage. They would not capitalize however, and the Falcons ended up striking first, with a goal coming eight minutes into play from Sam Lombardi. To tie it up at 2-2, Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)), assisted by Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS), scored with just under five minutes left until the second intermission.
The final period was a big one for the Saints. Two goals game from Emily Stegora (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)), one on a power play assisted by Klaas and Lalikova three minutes in, and the second unassisted and short-handed to make the score 4-2 with more than half of the third period remaining. The third and final goal of the period was an empty netter from Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) to give the game it's final score of 5-2.
