csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica men's basketball team triumphed over conference rival Northland College 89-70 Wednesday night thanks to a 14-0 second half run.
First Half
Northland (6-10, 3-5 UMAC) got things started by scoring a three-pointer. A few seconds later,
Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) tied the game at 3-3 with his own three-pointer.
Newman scored off a layup to extend the lead to 5-3, before Northland tied the game 5-5. The LumberJacks carried the lead until about halfway into the half.
Two
Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) free throws tied the game for the fifth time at 30-30 with six minutes remaining in the half. Back-to-back layups by
Dylan Zimmerman (Elmdale, Minn./Upsala HS) gave the Saints a 36-35 lead with four minutes to go.
The Saints held onto this lead until a Northland three-pointer regained the lead for the LumberJacks at 40-39 with less than two minutes before the half. The Saints responded with back-to-back three-pointers from
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) and CSS led 45-43 at the half.
Both teams shot over 50 percent in the half with the Saints at 57 percent.
Second Half
To start the second, Northland quickly took the lead with a good free throw and layup, putting the score at 46-45. On the next possession,
Zach Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) shot a good layup to take the lead for CSS at 47-46.
Northland managed to tie up the game at 50-50 with a layup and 13 minutes left in the game. However,
Sam Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) quickly fought back with a three-pointer, scoring for the Saints and bringing the score to 53-50. After the good three-pointer, the Saints kept the lead for the rest of the game.
Leading by one with 11:40 remaining, the Saints proceeded to go on a 14-0 run over the span of four minutes to widen the margin to 15. Anderson and Thompson each had four points during the run.
The Saints made 17 free throws in the final three minutes and won 89-70.
Notable Performances
Anderson led the Saints for the third straight game with 23 points. Dahlman scored 12 points while Newman and
Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Newman added 11 points and Thompson finished with 10 points.
Brandon Galland led the LumberJacks with 20 points and Harrison Lucas added 17 points.
