PREVIEW: Women's Soccer Faces Road Tests this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team, who is coming off a loss to No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, faces two more NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago in Luther College (Iowa) on Friday and the University of St. Thomas on Sunday.

Last Action: The Saints opened their season at home with the Advantage Emblem Cup last weekend … On Friday, the Saints played to a 2-2 draw with Alma College (Mich.) in the first meeting between the two programs … Taylor Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) and Lexie DeWall (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Morningside)) each recorded goals for the Saints … On Sunday, the Saints faced No. 10 UW-Whitewater, and limited the Warhawks to many good scoring opportunities, but gave up a first half goal that held up in a 1-0 defeat.
 
Advantage Emblem All-Tournament: The Saints had two players named to the Advantage Emblem Cup All-Tournament team … Senior defender Cali Marsaa (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) and junior midfielder Hannah Zeis (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) were named to the team … Zeis was named to the team for the second consecutive year.
 
Difficult Start: Three of St. Scholastica's first four games of the season will be against NCAA Division III Tournament teams from a season ago … University of Wisconsin-Whitewater advanced to third round of the national tournament … Luther College (Iowa) fell in the second round and the University of St. Thomas lost in the first round of the tournament … Other games against 2016 NCAA Tournament teams include two match-ups against UMAC representative University of Minnesota Morris and an October home game against Augsburg College.
 
End the Streak: The Saints are winless in their last seven games dating back to last season and have been shutout in four of those games … The seven-game winless streak is the program's longest since the end of the 1997 and beginning of 1998 seasons.

The Norse have won two straight since dropping their season opener to Illinois Wesleyan University … Luther defeated Knox College (Ill.) at home and followed that with a 3-2 double overtime victory at St. Olaf College on Wednesday … The Norse are the reigning Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) co-regular season and tournament champions … However, they have been picked to finish third in the league this season … Luther made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history last season and finished ranked No. 25 in the nation … The Norse lose six starters from that squad, including four-time all-conference performers Melisse Chasse and Ellie Bunz … Also gone are defenders Erin Danielson and Gabi Meirick, who were named Iowa Conference Defensive MVPs in 2015 and 2016, respectively … Six different players have scored seven of the team's goals thus far this season.

The Tommies opened the season with a 1-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point last Friday and then settled for a 2-2 tie with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Sunday … St. Thomas fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season after capturing the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular season title … In 2016, the Tommies set a school record with 15 shutouts … Head Coach Sheila McGill is one win shy of becoming the program's winningest coach at 111 wins … The Tommies return All-American forward Mallory DeBoom as well as All-MIAC performers Bri Bourdage and Hailey Zweber … St. Thomas has been picked to win the MIAC again this season.
