WHITEWATER, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The No. 23 St. Scholastica baseball team led 2-1 entering the sixth inning Thursday morning, but the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse took advantage of two CSS errors in the sixth to score six runs and ultimately scored the final 10 runs of the game to win 11-2 in the first game of NCAA Division III Midwest Regional.

The Action
The Saints threatened first in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with one out. However, CSS would strikeout twice to end the threat. The Eagles carried that momentum into the top of the third as they took advantage of a leadoff walk to record a one-out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

That lead didn't last long as Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) drilled a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the bottom frame to tie the contest at 1-1. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Eric Pearson (Champlin, Minn. /Champlin Park HS ) hit another solo home run to left center to put the Saints in front 2-1. Unfortunately for the Saints, that would be their last hit of the game.

Moving to the sixth, La Crosse put runners on the corners with one out. CSS would misplay a grounder to first, which allowed a run to score and put runners at the corners again. A squeeze bunt put the go-ahead run across to make it 3-2. That was followed by another Saints error to load the bases. Following a pitching change, the Eagles recorded three run-scoring singles to lengthen the lead to 7-2.

La Crosse added four more runs in the ninth to make the final score 11-2.

Pitching
Grant Rindal (Superior, Wis./Superior HS ) went 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out four in the loss. Caleb Boushley improved to 9-2 on the year for La Crosse, striking out seven in eight innings.

Top Offensive Performers
Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) had the only non-home run hit for the Saints to extend his reached base streak to 32 games. Joel Zyhowski had two hits and three RBIs for the Eagles (29-17). La Crosse finished with 15 hits, but only one of those was an extra-base hit.
