DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team opened the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) portion of its schedule on Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader from the University of Minnesota Morris at Wade Stadium.

Game 1: CSS 13, UMM 7
The first game of the day saw the Saints erase a six-run deficit to win by a final margin of six runs, thanks to a nine-run fifth inning.

The Cougars got off to a fast start in the top of the first inning, plating six runs. Four of those six runs came on a Lucas Luedtke grand slam home run over the right field wall.

CSS was able to scratch across runs in the second and third innings to make it 6-2. Michael Grove (Forest Lake, Minn./Edina HS ) had a sacrifice fly in the second and Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn. /Mankato West HS) had a RBI single in the third.

Morris added a run in the top of the fifth to make it 7-2 entering the bottom frame. The bottom of the fifth was an ominous start for Morris as a Cougar error allowed the leadoff runner on. Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) followed with a RBI single to make it 7-3.

St. Scholastica then hit three consecutive extra-base hits to right field to cut the Morris lead to 7-6. A Trevor Bernsdorf (Elmer, Minn./Floodwood HS ) sacrifice fly scored his younger brother Riley Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn. /Floodwood HS) to tie the game at 7-7. Two batters later Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) hit a RBI double to left center to give the Saints their first lead at 8-7. Joey Zwak (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS ) had a RBI triple and Minks a two-run double to close the nine-run inning for CSS. When the dust settled the Saints led 11-7, accumulating seven extra-base hits in the inning.

Colvard added another RBI in the sixth and Minks hit a solo home run in the seventh to make the final score 13-7.

Martin Alcoverde (Tucson, Ariz. /Sahuarita HS (Mesabi Range CC)) picked up the win as he settled down after the first inning. The St. Scholastica bullpen was strong again, not allowing a run and giving up just three hits in the final four innings. Jacob Dzubay (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS (Butler) ) went two innings and Sam Sorenson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS ) finished the final two innings, not allowing a hit.

Minks was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Wollenzien was 3-for -5 with three RBIs. Nine of St. Scholastica's 15 hits were extra-base hits.

Game 2: CSS 11, UMM 1 (F/7)
The final game of the day saw CSS pitcher Grant Rindal (Superior, Wis./Superior HS ) hold Minnesota Morris in check and the Saints dominate the middle innings to win 11-1 in seven innings.

After a scoreless two innings of play, the Saints got on the board on Tim Munn (Champlin, Minn. /Champlin Park HS ) RBI groundout in the third inning. Later in the inning. Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) drove in Minks with a single to extend the lead to 2-0.

It was Munn again in the fourth inning with a two-run single up the middle, doubling the margin to 4-0. Minks followed with a RBI single to make it 5-0.

In the fifth inning, Trevor Bernsdorf (Elmer, Minn./Floodwood HS ) ripped a two-run double to right center to extend it to 7-0. Colvard also had a RBI double and Zwak a RBI groundout as the score read 9-0 after five innings.

Meanwhile, Rindal was cruising on the mound, not allowing a hit and just one base runner through four innings. The Cougars did get their first hit in the fifth and then pushed a run across in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-1.

A Wollenzien RBI double in the bottom of the sixth made it 10-1. CSS then ended the game early by mercy rule with a Minks RBI in the seventh to make the final 11-1.

Zwak, Minks and Wollenzien all had three hits in game two. Munn finished with three RBIs. Rindal picked up the win, allowing three hits in six innings of work.
