DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica baseball team had another successful matchup on Saturday when they defeated Martin Luther College 12-0 in game one and 10-0 in game two, taking advantage of the 10-run-rule and winning in seven innings in both games.
Game 1: CSS 12, MLC 0 (F/7)
The Saints started early in game one, getting five runs on the board in the second inning. To start things off, Riley Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn. /Floodwood HS) walked. From there he stole second, then advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Trevor Bernsdorf (Elmer, Minn./Floodwood HS ) came up with an RBI single for the first run of the game. He then advanced on a wild pitch, which put him in position to score on a single from Andrew Colvard. A triple from Joey Zwak (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS ) in the next at bat pushed Colvard home to make the score 3-0 with one out. Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) contributed a double down the left field line for an RBI and scored on a single from Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn. /Mankato West HS) after being advanced to third on a sacrifice fly from Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ). This put the Saints up 5-0 at the end of the second inning.Â
A quick one-two-three for the CSS defense in both the top of the third and fourth gave the Saints plenty of time at the plate, which they used, collecting six run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Knights helped the Saints out by committing four errors during the fourth alone. Duex made it all the way around the diamond without earning a single base. Minks and Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) both reached on errors as well, then made it home on a two RBI double from Wollenzien. R. Bernsdorf singled up the middle to push Wollenzien to third, then a walk from T. Bernsdorf loaded the bases. Aaron Weber (Sauk Rapids, Minn. /Pierz HS ) then stepped up to the plate and popped a two RBI single to left center, the third and final hit of the inning, making the score 11-0 in favor of CSS.Â
The final run of the game came in the sixth inning for CSS, once again set up by an error from the Knights. Tim Munn (Champlin, Minn. /Champlin Park HS ) reached on a mishandled ball by the first baseman and advanced to second on the same error. A sac fly from R. Bernsdorf pushed Munn to third base, who then scored on a wild pitch to give the game its final score of 12-0.Â
Ben Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn. /Osseo HS) started on the mound for CSS and allowed only one hit in five innings pitched. He also earned three strikeouts. August Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn. /Henry Sibley HS ) stepped in for the final two innings, earning a strikeout and allowing no hits. Wollenzien led the way for CSS at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. R. Bernsdorf also had a good day with the bat and went 2-for-3.
Game 2: CSS 10, MLC 0 (F/7)
CSS shutout the Knights in game two as well, earning the ninth and tenth runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game early on the 10-run-rule. The first runs came for the Saints in the second inning, once again. R. Bernsdorf got on base on a walk, then advanced to third on a single up the middle from T. Bernsdorf. Michael Grove (Forest Lake, Minn./Edina HS ) grounded out in his at bat, but collected an RBI on the play. Colvard then bunted for a hit up the third base line, advancing T. Bernsdorf to third. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, which scored Bernsdorf. Duex collected an RBI in the inning as well, scoring Colvard and making the score 3-0.
The Saints put up three more runs in the third. Neutzling singled in the lead off spot, then moved to second on a walk from Wollenzien. A passed ball pushed the runners to second and third, then a walk to R. Bernsdorf loaded the bases. A double play ball to the infield gave the Saints two outs, but allowed Neutzling to score and put Wollenzien on third. An RBI double from Grove pushed Wollenzien home for the second run of the inning. Grove then scored on a throwing error by the pitcher to make the score 6-0.
In the fourth inning, the Saints put up just one more run with the RBI going to Neutzling to make it a 7-0 game. Then an RBI sac fly from Haydn Lanoue (Rosemount, Minn. /Rosemount HS ) in the sixth inning made the score 8-0.Â
Finally, in the bottom of the seventh the Saints managed to get the 10 run lead which ended the game. Colvard singled up the middle with two outs, then headed back to the bench as Alek Stone (Mahtomedi, Minn. /Mahtomedi HS) moved in to pinch run for him. Zwak followed up with a single to left field, then both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Braydon Hanson (Monticello, Minn. /Monticello HS (UW-Whitewater) ) delivered the game-ending single down the right field line, which scored both Zwak and Stone, earning the Saints the 10-0 win over the Knights.
Dan Hansen (Brooklyn Center, Minn./Park Center HS ) took the win for CSS from the mound, pitching five full innings, allowing only two hits, and collecting three strikeouts. Nick Peterson (Richfield, Minn. /Richfield HS (St. Cloud Tech & CC) ) finished out the final two innings, striking out one batter and allowing zero hits. Hanson went 1-for-2 with the two walk-off RBIs. Duex went 2-for-2 with an RBI of his own.
