KISSIMMEE, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team split a pair of one-run games on Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games to open its Spring Break Trip.
CSS 3, St. Joseph (L.I.) 2
The Saints earned their first victory of the season, coming out on top against St. Joseph's College (Long Island) 3-2.
The Golden Eagles struck first in the top of the first with a two-out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. The Saints answered in the bottom frame when
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) scored on a St. Joe's throwing error to make it 1-1.
CSS took the lead in the bottom of the second on an
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) two-out double to bring in
Samantha Clark (Brule, Wis/Northwestern HS) and make the score 2-1.
It remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth when the Golden Eagles walked to put the runners at the corners, but the St. Joe's runner continued to second causing a rundown, which allowed the runner at third to score and tie it at 2-2.
However, the Saints loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth and two batters later freshman
Dakota Underwood (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage HS) drove in
Olivia Bretting (Ashland, Wis. /Ashland HS ) to put the Saints back on top 3-2.
Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) went on to retire the next six Golden Eagle batters as the Saints won its first game of the season 3-2.
Kohl finished with a career-high nine strikeouts in the complete-game victory. She allowed only three hits and one earned run. Bretting and Borgeson each had two hits in CSS's nine-hit attack.
Wisconsin Lutheran 1, CSS 0
The second game of the day was the season-opener for Wisconsin Lutheran College and the Warriors defeated the Saints in a pitchers' dual 1-0.
The Saints had chances offensively. CSS loaded the bases with two outs in the third inning, but a diving play by a WLC outfielder resulted in no runs.
The Warriors had their first runner advance past second base in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff double, followed by a sacrifice put a runner at third with one out. WLC then performed a squeeze bunt to score the runner from third and make it 1-0 Warriors.
It was still 1-0 in the top of the seventh when
Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) led off the inning with a single.
Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) came in to pinch run and after a wild pitch advanced her to second, Rydlund stole third with one out. Unfortunately, the Saints hit two straight groundouts to the pitcher to end the game, giving Wisconsin Lutheran a 1-0 victory.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) struck out seven and allowed only three hits to pick up the hard-luck loss. Taylor Bjork struck out three in six innings to earn the win.
Bremer and Dailey combined for four of the team's five hits. Bremer extends her hit streak to eight games.
