AUBURNDALE, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team allowed six runs in the top of the seventh and that proved to be the difference in Sunday's 8-2 loss to Wheaton College (Mass.) at the Russmatt Invitational.

The Action
Senior Martin Alcoverde (Tucson, Ariz. /Sahuarita HS (Mesabi Range CC)) started his first game of the season for the Saints and his first five outs recorded were strikeouts.

Alcoverde had seven strikeouts thru 2.1 innings, but ran into trouble in the third after a pair of infield singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. The Lyons then hit a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the St. Scholastica offense could not get much going. The Saints only had two hits thru six innings. Alcoverde completed the sixth inning with a pair of strikeouts and was replaced in the seventh. He finished with 13 strikeouts in six innings and allowed just two hits; both did not leave the infield. The 13 strikeouts are the most by a Saint since 2009.

With Alcoverde out of the game, the Lyons took advantage. After a strikeout to begin the top of the seventh, the next 10 batters reached base and six runs came across to make the score 7-0 Wheaton.

Joey Zwak (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS ) had a RBI single in the bottom frame to get the Saints on the board and then Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) scored on a Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) single in the eighth to make it 7-2. The Lyons added a run in the ninth to make the final 8-2.

Pitching
Opposite of Alcoverde's 13-strikeout performance in the loss, Wheaton's Brady Furdon had eight strikeouts and scattered four hits in the victory for the Lyons (1-3).

Top Offensive Performers
Duex had two of CSS' six hits on the day. Jared Sharkey was 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Wheaton offensively.
