DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team suffered a 5-1 loss against No. 3 Adrian College (Mich.) on Friday evening at the Mars Lakeview Arena, ending a four-game winning streak.
The Action
The Bulldogs got the first points on the board with two goals in the first period. The first goal came 30 seconds after the Saints killed off an Adrian power play, credited to Brooke Lupi, assisted by Courntey Tyll. The second goal of the period came just 15 seconds before the first intermission when Sarah Shureb found the back of the net.
The second period saw the only goal of the game for the Saints in answer to the one scored by the Bulldogs. Adrian made the score 3-0 eight minutes into the period thanks to Brooke Lupi - her second goal of the game. Three minutes later, the Saints got on the board after Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS), assisted by Emily Stegora (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)) and Sami Anderson (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS), put one past the goalie. Anderson's assist goes down in the books as her first point of the season.
Adrian found more success in the third period, much to the frustration of the Saints. The fourth goal for the Bulldogs didn't come until 14:50 had passed in the period, scored by Lexie Tzafaroglou. Five minutes later in the last second of the game, the Bulldogs saw success on a power play, giving the game its final score of 5-1.
Goalkeeping
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) was between the pipes for CSS and she collected 39 saves. This will be the first loss of the season credited to the freshman goalie. Jade Walsh was in the goal for Adrian and saved 23 of the 24 shots she faced.
