csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team opened its 2017 season on Saturday night with a pair of losses to St. Catherine University and Nebraska Wesleyan University at the Rochester Dome.
#9 St. Catherine 14, CSS 0
Ninth-ranked St. Kate's scored three runs in the top of the first and never looked back to hand the Saints a season-opening 14-0 loss in five innings.
After the three-run opening inning, the Wildcats added two runs in the third, one in the fourth and eight in the fifth to end the game early on the eight-run mercy rule.
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and
Olivia Bretting (Ashland, Wis. /Ashland HS ) recorded the two hits for the Saints. St. Kate's finished with 13 hits.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) picked up the loss.
Krista Flugstad earned the win and also drove in three runs. Claire Woebke was 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
Nebraska Wesleyan 8, CSS 2
The Prairie Wolves scored in every inning it batted in to down the Saints 8-2 in the nightcap.
NWU pushed a run across in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Saints got their first offense of the season in the top of the third. Bremer hit a one-out double to bring in
Samantha Clark (Brule, Wis/Northwestern HS) to make it 2-1. Bretting then followed with a double to bring in Bremer and tie the game at 2-2.
However, the Prairie Wolves answered with two runs in the bottom half to regain a two-run lead. NWU then added a run in the fourth and fifth and two more runs in the sixth to make the final 8-2.
Bremer was 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored to lead the offense. Morgan Shipley and Maddy Ethen each had three hits to lead the Prairie Wolves (2-0).
Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had five strikeouts in the loss for the Saints.
