MORRIS, Minn. (
csssaints.com) - Similar to the first matchup between the St. Scholastica women's basketball team and the University of Minnesota Morris, CSS held Morris in check in the first half, but the Cougars pulled away in the second half to win 61-52 Friday night.
The Action
To start the first quarter,
Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS), assisted by
Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS), put the Saints on the board first 2-0. St. Scholastica maintained the lead through the rest of the quarter, leading by as much as seven points. CSS would lead 15-12 going into the second quarter.
After the Saints led by eight following a Rachel Weyneberg layup in the second quarter Morris would rally with a 10-0 run and take the lead for the first time in the game with three minutes left in the quarter at 25-23. Brannen would net a good 3-pointer to give CSS again at 26-25. However, the Cougars would take back the lead and go into halftime up 28-27.
In the third quarter, Morris scored the first 18 points of the half to build a 19-point lead. St. Scholastica was unable to score until only two minutes remained in the quarter on
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) 3-pointer. CSS did score the final eight points of the quarter to make it 46-35.
Morris would start the quarter by extending the lead back to 14 points, but the St. Scholastica would attempt to catch up with an 11-1 run and would be within four points of the Cougars with four minutes left in the game. Morris connected on a big 3-pointer with 3:42 remaining and hit free throws late to hold off the Saints 61-52.
Top Performers
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) led the Saints with 11 points. Walther recorded nine points and
Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) added eight points. Swanson also had five assists.
Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds
Elli Stevenson led the Cougars (19-5, 14-1 UMAC) with 14 points. Kendra Raths chipped in 12 points. Tori Holt grabbed 10 rebounds.
Up Next
To close out the season, the Saints (7-16, 5-10 UMAC) travel to St. Bonifacius for a game against Crown College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
