csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team concluded the 2016-17 season on Saturday with a 76-48 victory over Crown College.
No Walther, No Problem
The Saints were without leading scorer
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy), but that turned out to not be an issue as they never trailed in the contest.
Mel Weisbrick (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Hibbing CC)) and
Rachel Weyenberg (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored the first nine points for CSS as it jumped out to a 9-1 lead. The Storm made their first field goal midway through the first quarter. The St. Scholastica lead climbed to 11 before Crown cut into the deficit and trailed 18-13 at the end of the first period.

Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) three-point-play gave the Saints their largest lead of the first half at 32-19 with four minutes remaining in the second quarter. CSS went into the locker room leading 36-25.
St. Scholastica put the game out of reach in the final five minutes of the third quarter and the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter. The Saints went on a 26-3 run during that seven-minute span and when the dust settled the CSS lead grew to 30 at 66-36.
The Saints led by as much as 33 before winning by a final margin of 76-48.
Top Performances for CSS
Weisbrick led the charge with 16 points. Weyenberg added 11 points and
Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. In her final game as a Saint,
Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) scored nine points and led the team with five assists and four steals.
Top Performances for the Opponent
Katie Hinkle led the Storm (1-24, 0-16 UMAC) with eight points.
Season Ends
The Saints finish the season with an 8-16 overall record and 6-10 in league play. CSS graduates just one senior in Swanson.
