MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's basketball team came back after digging themselves into a hole early in the game on Friday night against the University of Minnesota Morris, ultimately ending up with a 93-84 victory.
The Action
The Cougars opened the game with 16 unanswered points. After a time out and a full personnel change by the Saints, Marc Peterson (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) hit a bucket from beyond the arc to start things off. The Saints slowly battled back through the half, creeping their way back towards the lead. Halfway through the half, Connor Gray (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) started off an 11-point run by the Saints, seven of those points coming from Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS), to take their first lead of the half. From there, the baskets went back-and-forth, and the half ended up tied with a score of 44-44, a favorable outcome for CSS considering how the half began.Â
Dylan Zimmerman (Elmdale, Minn./Upsala HS) had the first basket of the second half to put the Saints in the lead, but the Cougars did not give up, despite losing the substantial first half point advantage. With just over six minutes left in the game, and the score tied at 74-74, Kory Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) took matters into his own hands. He hit four unanswered 3-pointers in a row, pushing the Saints lead to 12, which was a disparity that the Cougars would be unable to bounce back from in the last five minutes of the game, which ended with a score of 93-84 in favor of CSS.
Notable Performances
Three Saints players had double digit points. Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds. Deadrick was behind him with 17, his point total boosted by the vital 12-point run in the second half. Johnson had 15 points on the night with six rebounds. Zach Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) and Newman each had five assists.
CD Douglas and Anthony Fisher each had 16 points to lead the Cougars.Â
