DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team was edged by Concordia University Wisconsin 4-3 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena. CUW scored all four goals on the power-play.
Tied Up First
To get the game started,
Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) scored, unassisted, her sixth goal of the season only 70 seconds into the contest to put the Saints up 1-0. Three minutes later, a penalty would be called on CSS for holding, giving Concordia a power play opportunity. The Falcons would take full advantage, scoring with thirty seconds left in the power play to tie the game 1-1.
St. Scholastica would give CUW three more power plays this period, with the Falcons even having a 5-on-3 player opportunity at one point. The Saints would stop any chance of CUW being able to score, but would allow 20 shots compared to their own seven. The period would end and the game would be tied 1-1 going into the second.
Seven minutes into the second,
Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) would break through the Concordia offense to score, unassisted. This put CSS in the lead, 2-1. St. Scholastica's good fortune would continue with a penalty being called on CUW, giving the Saints a power play opportunity, but nothing would come off this advantage.
10 seconds after St. Scholastica's power play was called off, a minor penalty was called on CSS for hooking. With twenty seconds left in the power play, the Falcons would score their second power-play goal of the game, tying the score up 2-2.
The Saints responded when
Emily Stegora (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)), assisted by
Kaleigh Hamann (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), scored her 11th goal of the season to regain the lead at 3-2. CSS would work hard to maintain their lead and would be given two more power-play opportunities, but the Saints struggled to score. CUW would also received a power play opportunity late in the period, but their team was also unable to score. The score would be up 3-2 going into the third and final period.
Close Third
Four minutes in, a penalty would be called on Concordia for cross-checking. St. Scholastica would work hard on this power play, but would be unable to score. A minute after the power play, two penalties would be called on St. Scholastica, giving CUW another 5-on-3 player advantage. One of the penalties would run out of time, but the Falcons would still be able to score with three seconds remaining on the final penalty. With both teams now tied, the Saints and the Falcons fought hard in order to grab the lead.
With nine minutes left to go, a major penalty would be called on St. Scholastica for checking from behind. This call gave the Falcons a chance to score with a five minute power-play. However a minute into their power play, a minor penalty would be called on Concordia, ending their power play for two minutes. The two minutes would expire, and the Falcons would be on a power play again. This helped the Falcons score the go-ahead goal at 4-3 with five minutes remaining.
The Saints would fight hard to tie the game. This included having two power plays and an attempt to pull the goalie, but St. Scholastica would be unable to score. The period ended and with a final score of 4-3, Concordia took home the win.

St. Scholastica's Sawyer had the most shots on goal for her team, with eight.
Mac Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (St. Cloud State)) shot five; Klaas and
Tessa Lowry (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School) shot three each.
For goaltending, CSS'
Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) stopped 43 shots. CUW's Christina Pattengale blocked 25 shots.
