DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team got called on three penalties in the final six minutes of regulation of Friday night's game versus Hamline University, ultimately allowing the Pipers to score two third period goals to force the contest into a 2-2 tie.

The Action
The Saints came out strong in the game, and took the lead after just three minutes had passed. Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) was credited with the first goal, her fifth of the season, and was assisted by Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Kaleigh Hamann (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) on the play.

The second period saw much of the same luck for CSS, with Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) scoring on a breakaway goal with five minutes left until the second intermission. Emily Stegora (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)) assisted on the goal.

Trouble struck for the Saints in the third period, starting with a tripping penalty on the Saints with five and a half minutes left to play. It was less than a minute later when the Saints were called for another penalty, this time for slashing, which gave the Pipers (7-2-1) a two skater advantage. Hamline scored with less than a minute left in the 3-on-5 opportunity to put the score at 2-1.

With a minute and a half until the end of regulation, the Saints were called for their third penalty of the period, and of the game. Hamline pulled their goalie and capitalized on the two extra skaters, putting in its second power play goal of the game to tie things up 2-2. There were no more shots on goal in the rest of regulation time, pushing the game into extra minutes.

Overtime passed without a goal, though it was not without opportunities. Hamline had seven shots on goal in the five minutes, and the Saints had two. CSS goaltender Lori Huseby (Babbitt, Minn./Northeast Range HS) made a spectacular save in overtime on a two-on-one to keep as the game ended in a draw.

Goaltending
Huseby was between the pipes for CSS, saving 54 of the 56 shots she faced. The 54 saves in this game alone almost doubled her total number of saves for this season and was the third-most saves in a game in program history.

For Hamline, Annie Juergens gets the win, making 19 saves on 21 shots.

Up Next
The Saints (6-1-3) are off now until the New Year, when they'll open 2018 with a game against the University of St. Thomas on Saturday, January 6 at Mars Lakeview Arena. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m.
