Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the St. Scholastica men's basketball team to a 75-56 victory over the University of Wisconsin Superior at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Wednesday.
All Newman Early
The Yellowjackets (2-6, 0-1 UMAC) opened the scoring, but the Saints would take the lead 24 seconds into the game off of a three-pointer by
Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS). In fact, Newman scored St. Scholastica's first 13 points of the game. The Saints would retain their lead for the remainder of the game. After Superior's bucket to open the game, CSS went on a 22-3 run over the next five minutes to take a 17-point lead
The Saints would finish the half with a 40-24 lead.
The Saints Extend their Lead
The 'jackets reduced the Saints lead to 13 with 11:16 to go, but the Saints responded with a pair of free-throws by
Zach Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS). The Saints then went on a 7-point run to earn a 62-42 lead with eight minutes remaining.
With just under two minutes remaining in the game UWS made a three-pointer to make it a nineteen-point game, but CSS responded with a three-pointer and two free-throws by
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) to finish the game with a 75-56 lead.
Top Performances for the Saints
Newman shot 62 percent from the field to lead the Saints in scoring with 22 points. Anderson and
Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) both had 12 points.
Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Top Performances for the Opponent
Vid Milenkovic led UWS in scoring with 20 points. Colton Williams tallied 14.
