FOND DU LAC, Wis. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team completed the sweep over Marian University (Wis.) 2-0 Saturday afternoon. CSS is now 9-1 all-time at Marian.

A Matched First Period
In the first period, Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) got things started for the Saints with a shot on goal, which was saved by the Marian goaltender. CSS shot three more shots on goal and the Sabres shot one before the first penalty was called on Marian for holding at the seven minute mark. CSS, now on a two minute power play, fought hard to score and shot three times on goal. But, Marian's defense was able to shut CSS down, and time ran out on the first power play opportunity.

Throughout the rest of the period, both teams were evenly matched. With 45 seconds left, a minor penalty was called on MU for interference, giving CSS another power play opportunity. Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) would get a quick shot on goal before the final whistle of the period blew, but was stopped by the Marian goaltender. The score was 0-0 heading into the second, with 12 shots on goal from the Saints and seven from the Sabres.

Physical Second
With about six seconds left in the power-play that carried over from the first period and one minute into the second, Klaas and Denisa Lalikova (Puchov, Slovakia/Proctor Academy, N.H.) assisted to Emily Stegora (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)) for a power-play goal. Stegora's fourth goal of the season put the Saints up 1-0.

A minor penalty was called on CSS for interference, and would be the first of four power plays this period for Marian. Two penalties would also be called on Marian, giving the Saints the power-play for those. During these penalties, St. Scholastica would only three shots on goal and two good scoring opportunities and Marian had seven shots on goal but no good opportunities to tie up the game.

The last power play would end with a little more than four minutes left to go in the period.  The Sabres were able to overpower the Saints for the rest of the period, and shot more three times. Time would run out and the Saints were still in the lead at 1-0. The Saints had nine shots on goal while the Sabres had 12 shots on goal.

A Strong Third Period
13 seconds into the third, a two minute hooking penalty was called on Marian, giving the Saints a two minute power play. The Saints were able to get three shots on goal before time ran out and the Sabres were back to full strength.

Five minutes in, the last penalty was called on Marian for interference, putting CSS on another power play. CSS would fight hard to score here, but MU shut them down completely. The breakaway that the Saints needed to score wouldn't come until the 12 minute mark. Klaas and Stegora assisted to Lalikova, strengthening St. Scholastica's lead to 2-0.

Marian fought hard to challenge the Saints' lead with the time that was left on the clock, but the final score would stand at 2-0 in favor of CSS. St. Scholastica had eight shots on goal this period, while Marian had six.

Klass led the Saints with eight shots on goal. Mac Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (St. Cloud State)) had seven and Nundahl shot four.

For goaltending, Lori Huseby (Babbitt, Minn./Northeast Range HS) saved 25 out of 25 shots she faced. This was her first college appearance and her first college career shutout. Marian goalkeeper Lindsey Strainis saved 27 out of 29 shots.
