DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team beat out Northland College 4-0 Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena. The Saints have won their last five home openers and are 6-1-1 all-time in home openers.
First Period
Emily Stegora (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)) got things started for the Saints by getting the first shot on goal of the game. Play would stop, six minutes later, for an elbowing penalty called on CSS. This gave the LumberJills a powerplay, but the Saints were able to limit them to three shots on goal.
The power play expired and 27 seconds later, Stegora, with the assist from
Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)), scored her fifth goal of the season to put the Saints on the board 1-0.
With a little more than two minutes left in the period, a penalty was called on Northland for slashing, giving St. Scholastica a power play. CSS was able to get two shots on goal before the power play ended. Time would run out soon after and the Saints would go into the second period 1-0. CSS shot a total of 11 times on goal and the LumberJills shot nine.
Second Period
Two minutes into the second period,
Kaleigh Hamann (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), with the assist from
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS), scored her first goal of the season. Now up 2-0, the Saints fought hard to strengthen their lead.
Four minutes later, Scholastica was given another power play opportunity after a penalty was called on Northland for hooking. About halfway through, a second penalty was called on Northland for interference, giving CSS a 5-on-3 player advantage. The Saints were unable to score, as Northland ramped up their defense and shut them down.
The Saints would get one more goal literally as the buzzer sounded to end the second period. With 1.1 on the clock, Stegora put the puck on goal directly off the faceoff which was blocked aside, but right there was Klaas to put it into the net as the buzzer sounded to make it 3-0 at the second intermission.
Third Period
Two minutes in, the LumberJills had a penalty called on the team for hooking, giving CSS their fourth power play of the game. 20 seconds into this powerplay,
Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS), with help from Stegora and
Denisa Lalikova (Puchov, Slovakia/Proctor Academy, N.H.), scored. Nundahl's first goal of the season propelled St. Scholastica's lead further to 4-0. Both teams would be evenly matched for the rest of the game, and time would run out with the Saints in the lead 4-0.
Mac Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (St. Cloud State)) led the Saints with seven shots on goal. Stegora had six and
Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) shot five. St. Scholastica goaltenderÂ
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) saved 20 of the 20 shots she faced for her first shutout of the season. Northland College's goaltender Gabby Suhr saved 33 out of 37 shots she faced.
