DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – History did not repeat itself Saturday night at Public Schools Stadium as this time the St. Scholastica men's soccer team was on the wrong side of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship game decided by penalty kicks. The University of Wisconsin-Superior came out on top 4-2 in the shootout to take the conference title.
First Half
The Saints held a 10-5 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes of action. However, four of UWS' five shots were on goal and it had a couple of good chances early, but they were turned aside by goalkeeper
Sandy Davidson-Hunt (Kenora, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas).
St. Scholastica got on the board in the 39
th minute when
Juan Ochoa (Chihuahua, Mexico/Prepa Tec) beat the goalkeeper off a nice throw-in by
Logan Kittelson (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) to make it 1-0 at the half.
Second Half
The Yellowjackets were looking to find the equalizer and had a great chance in the 78
th minute when Davidson-Hunt was out of position and Superior put the ball on net, but it was headed away by
Sam Brickley (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS).
However, three minutes later, a penalty kick was awarded to the Yellowjackets when Davidson-Hunt collided with a UWS attacker in the box. Elliot Chapman converted the penalty kick to tie the game with less than nine minutes remaining.
CSS had the opportunity to regain the lead when
Ethan Kiffmeyer (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) headed the ball toward the net, but the ball was swatted away by UWS goalkeeper Dalton Von Kaenel.
After 90 minutes the game went to overtime tied at 1-1.
Overtime/Shootout
Not many scoring opportunities would present themselves in either 10-minute overtime frame and for the second straight year the UMAC title would be decided by a penalty-kick shootout.
Last year the Saints brought in a goalkeeper that specialized in stopping penalty kicks and it paid off as he stopped three shots to help the Saints capture the title. This year the Yellowjackets used a different goalkeeper for penalty kicks. That decision paid off as UWS converted its first kick, while the Saints would be denied by new goalkeeper Ulrick Lager.
However, the Yellowjackets' second attempt hit the post.
Jacob Carson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley HS) then tied it up 1-1 after two rounds. After both teams converted the third round of attempts, the Yellowjackets made their third in the fourth round, but the St. Scholastica attempt was deflected off the post by Lager.
That meant UWS could win it by converting its fifth attempt and Leonardo Peters did just that to give the Yellowjackets the UMAC Tournament title and a berth into next week's NCAA Division III Tournament.
End of Season
The Saints end their season with a 14-6-1 overall record. CSS also says goodbye to seniors
Sandy Davidson-Hunt (Kenora, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) and
Jacob Carson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley HS). For future news on the St. Scholastica men's soccer program, keep checking csssaints.com.
