SUPERIOR, Wis. (csssaints.com) – Freshman Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) scored a game-high 25 points, going 9-for-9 from the floor as the St. Scholastica men's basketball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stout 84-63 on Saturday at the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic, hosted by UW-Superior.
 
Saints Jump Out Front Early
The Saints welcomed back seniors Zach Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) and Joe Stark (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS), whom missed the first three games due to injury. Dahlman made his presence felt early with a bucket on the opening possession. Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) followed with back-to-back 3-point field goals to give the Saints an 8-0 lead.
 
The Blue Devils (2-2) battled back to tie the game at 25-25 with 6:34 remaining in the first half. However, St. Scholastica responded with a 7-0 run capped off by a Stark 3-pointer. CSS ended the half scoring eight of the final 10 points to lead 41-32 at halftime.
 
Wilken had 11 points, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the first half. Newman also had 11, going 3-for-4 on 3-point attempts. Dahlman had 10 points in the first 20 minutes.
 
Wilken Takes Over in the Second Half
Stout got the margin down to six with 13:33 to go, but Wilken answered with a 3-pointer. When the lead was five, Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) responded with a 3-pointer. The Blue Devils tried to get close again, but Wilken drained another 3-pointer to make it a nine-point game with 11 minutes to go.
 
Wilken added another 3-pointer to make it 61-51 with 8:30 remaining and the lead never got any closer. Anderson and Sam Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) added 3-pointers to extend the lead to 16. CSS ultimately pulled away for the 84-63 victory.
 
Top Performances for CSS
Wilken finished with a career-high 25 points on 9-of-9 shooting, including 7-for-7 from beyond the arc. That is a program record for the most field goals attempted without a miss. Wilken and Connor Gray (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Newman finished with 13 points, Dahlman with 12 points and Anderson with 10 points and eight assists.
 
Top Performances for the Opponent
Isaac Elliott led the Blue Devils with 18 points. Zach Dahl added 11 points off the bench.

The Saints (1-3) will be in action again tomorrow at the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic when they face Luther College (Iowa) at 2 p.m.
