ST. CLOUD, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The College of St. Scholastica men's basketball team started the season with a 94-71 loss to No. 20 Saint John's University at the Husky Hoopster Classic at Halenbeck Hall on Friday night.

First Half
The Johnnies started the half strongly, earning a nine-point lead before Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) opened the scoring for the Saints with a layup. Midway through the half St. John's had extended their lead 32-16.

By the end of the half the Johnnies had pulled ahead with a 52-37 lead. Newman led the Saints in scoring in the first half with 10 points.

Second Half
St. John's started the second half where they left off, extending its lead to 19 points four minutes into the half. Seven minutes into the half, the Saints went on a six-point run to reduce the deficit to 16 points. The Johnnies responded with two three-pointers, before Newman made a free throw with 10 minutes remaining.

The Saints would then twice come within 14 points of the Johnnies, but were not able to reduce their lead any further. The final score was 94-71 for the Johnnies.

Top Performances for CSS
Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) led the Saints in scoring, with 16 points. Newman put up 14, and Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) had 12. CSS shot at 39 percent for the game.

Top Performances for the Opponent
Jubie Alade led the scoring for the Johnnies with 22 points. David Stockman finished the game with 14 points and three blocks.
