ADRIAN, Mich. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team scored a late third period goal in Friday night's game to even the score against No. 4 Adrian College (Mich.) and ultimately earn the tie after a scoreless overtime period.
The Action
The first two periods of the game saw no scoring from either team. The first period saw only two penalties, both for tripping and one from each team, but neither club was able to capitalize on the player advantage. Despite the Bulldogs outshooting the Saints 19-2 in the first 20 minutes of play, the game went into the first intermission with a score tied at 0-0.
The second period was much of the same. Adrian recorded double the shots that CSS did - 10 to the Saints' five. CSS went on the power play three times during the period, but the Bulldogs killed off all three penalties.
Heading into the third period, the score was still tied at 0-0. The first tally finally made it onto the board on a goal from Adrian's Jaqueline White to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead. Adrian held the lead until there was just a minute and a half left in the game. Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) evened the score for the Saints with a last minute power play goal, assisted by Giorgia Battisti (Bolzano, Italy/Rice Memorial HS (Vermont)). The final minute of regulation time was scoreless, along with the five overtime minutes, which gave both teams their first ties of the season.
Goalkeeping
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) was between the pipes for the Saints and was a critical factor that kept CSS in the game. She made a season-high 47 saves during the game, allowing just a single goal from the Bulldogs.
For Adrian, Kate Turner made 17 saves and allowed just one goal during the game.
