DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's soccer team defeated conference rival North Central University (Minn.) 5-0 Wednesday afternoon at Saints Field. With this win, the Saints have at least the No. 2 seed in the UMAC postseason tournament that starts next week.
First Half
Both teams were evenly matched this period. Both the Saints and Rams only had one shot on goal each.
The first shot on goal came from the Saints 17 minutes into the game.
Jacob Luhrs (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley HS) assisted to
Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School), who lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper for the first goal of the game. Now at 1-0, CSS tried to get another shot on goal, but would be unable to for the rest of the period.
10 minutes left in the period, NCU shot their first shot on goal, but the ball was saved by St. Scholastica goalkeeper
Sandy Davidson-Hunt (Kenora, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas). North Central would try to get a goal this half, but would be unable to. Time ran out and the Saints would be in the lead 1-0.
Second Half
Four minutes into the half,
Noah Hooey (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) redirected Buckton's cross in front of the net, scoring for the Saints. Hooey's third goal of the season put the Saints up 2-0. The Rams fought hard to shut down the Saints and would succeed until about halfway through the period.
NCU shot on goal with 27 minutes left in the game, but it was saved by Davidson-Hunt. Davidson-Hunt would throw the ball to Luhrs, who then took it down field. Luhrs passed to
Juan Ochoa (Chihuahua, Mexico/Prepa Tec), where he was able to beat out the North Central goalkeeper and score. The goal strengthened St. Scholastica's lead to 3-0.
Hooey feed off this momentum, passing to
Sam Brickley (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) five minutes after Ochoa's goal. Brickley shot on the wide open net, scoring his first goal of his college career, pushing the Saints to 4-0.
With 10 minutes left, Brickley assisted to
Avnish Miyangar (Birmingham, England/Queen Mary’s Grammar School). Miyangar's header shot went flying into the goal, extending the lead to 5-0. This was the first goal of Miyanger's career.
Both teams fought hard to get another goal with the 10 minutes remaining, but neither would. The final score was 5-0 in favor of the Saints.
Ochoa had two shots on goal, while five other St. Scholastica players had one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Davidson-Hunt saved three out of three shots on goal. This game marks Davidson-Hunt's fifth shutout of the season.

The Saints (12-6, 10-1 UMAC) host Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday in the last regular season game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. With a win or tie on Saturday, the Saints will clinch the tournament's No. 1 seed.
