DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Superior recorded 20 offensive rebounds and had a 17-4 advantage in second-chance points to defeat the St. Scholastica women's basketball team 72-54 on Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium.
Saints Lead Early
Back-to-back baskets by
Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) gave the Saints a quick 4-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, St. Scholastica went on a 7-0 run capped by a
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) lay-up to give CSS an 11-4 lead.
However, the Yellowjackets countered with an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 14-13 with 3:30 left in the first period. UWS then ended the quarter by scoring the final seven points to take a 21-15 lead into the second quarter.
UWS in Control
The Saints were trailing by only three points three minutes into the second quarter, but then Superior went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to extend the margin to 31-19. The 'jackets took that 12-point lead into halftime up 38-26.
The Saints shot 57 percent from the floor in the first half and held UWS to 35 percent shooting, but still trailed by 12. How you ask? Superior had 16 offensive rebounds to St. Scholastica's one and out-scored CSS 10-0 in second-chance points. UWS also forced 15 CSS turnovers, which led to 16 points.
Cieluch got the Saints within nine twice in the third quarter, but the 'jackets lengthened their lead to 19 by the end of the quarter. The Superior lead got as high as 28 before the Saints closed the game on a 12-2 run to make the final score 72-54 in favor of the Yellowjackets.
Top Performances for CSS
Cieluch was the only Saint in double-figures with 15 points and also grabbed five rebounds.
Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and Swanson each had added nine points.
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) recorded a team-high six rebounds.
Top Performances for the Opponent
Eva Reinertsen had a game-high 19 points off the bench for the Yellowjackets (10-4, 6-0 UMAC). Hannah Norlin had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Hailey Kontny added 13 points.
