DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – Senior
Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) scored all four of the St. Scholastica men's hockey team's goals on Friday night, including two in the final two minutes, to break a 2-2 tie and give the Saints the 4-2 victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Quiet Start
The first period went by scoreless with the Saints out-shooting the Lions 17-8.
Seth Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s (Minnesota Iron Rangers-SIJHL)) rang the pipe in the period as the teams went a combined 0-for-3 on the power-play in the opening 20 minutes of action.
St. Scholastica eventually broke through on the power-play five minutes and 26 seconds into the second period as Millin ripped a shot past the goaltender from the left slot to make it 1-0.
Mark Whiteley (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross HS (Marian University)) had the assist.
That was the lone scoring in the period as the Saints failed to convert a 5-on-3 advantage and out-shot the Lions 16-4 in the second.
Up and Down and Up Third Period
The third period started much like the second period with Millin scoring a power-play goal in the opening four minutes to extend the CSS lead to 2-0.
Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) and Whiteley were credited with the assists.
The Saints looked to be in control until back-to-back penalties midway through the period gave Finlandia a 5-on-3 advantage. The Lions did capitalize on their opportunity with less than 10 minutes remaining to make it 2-1.
Three minutes later, CSS'
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) had a golden opportunity ring off the pipe and the carom went right Finlandia's Kendall Bolen-Porter, who countered back down the ice and knotted the game up at 2-2 with 6:13 remaining.
St. Scholastica would get a power-play opportunity with under four minutes left. It looked like Finlandia was going to kill it off, but with 11 seconds remaining on the man-advantage, it was Millin again going top shelf to beat the goaltender and give the Saints a 3-2 lead with 1:55 on the clock. Whiteley picked up his third assist of the night and
Brett Radford (Campbell River, British Columbia/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL)) also had the assist.
Millin sealed the contest 57 seconds later with an empty-netter to make the final 4-2.
Brandon Parrone (Peoria, Ariz./Brophy College Prep (Melfort-SJHL) ) was credited with the assist.
Four Goals in a Game
Millin becomes the sixth Saint in program history to score at least four goals in a game. He is the first to do it since Carter Davis recorded four goals against Marian University (Wis.) on November 27, 2010.
Goaltending
Peter Megariotis (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS (Adrian)) registered 18 saves to earn his sixth win of the season. Finlandia's Alex Rounds had 43 saves as the Lions are still in search of their first victory on the year.
