DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) -- On Saturday, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team beat out conference opponent Lawrence University (Wis) 2-1 for the second night in a row at Mars Lakeview Arena to complete the series sweep.
Early Lead
The Saints started out with an early penalty due to too many men on the ice, giving the Vikings an early power play. CSS was able to limit Lawrence to three shots during the two minute minor. 12 seconds left in penalty kill, the Vikings received a minor penalty, ending Lawrence's power play. The Saints had two shots, but were unable to score on this powerplay.
Eight minutes into the period, CSS would receive another penalty. With the extra player advantage, Lawrence was only able to shot once during the power play, with the Saints successfully killing it. St. Scholastica would then have their own chance at a powerplay with four minutes left in the period. Lawrence allowed two shots and one scoring opportunity, but CSS was unable to score here.
St. Scholastica's goal would come a minute after the powerplay and with only a minute left in the period.
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) assisted to
Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)) for the first goal of the game, putting the Saints on the board. The period would end with the score of 1-0 going into the second period.
Tied
A minute into the second period, Lawrence would receive a minor penalty for holding, giving the Saints the powerplay. St. Scholastica would have three good opportunities to score here, but would not be able to get the puck past the Lawrence goalie.
The Vikings would go on to score in the eighth minute of the period, scoring off of a rebound attempt to tie the game 1-1. CSS would fight hard to get a goal, outshooting Lawrence 16-13, but would not be able to this period. The score would be 1-1 going into the third period.
CSS Breakaway
Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)), assisted by Sutliffe and
Nolan Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)), was able to put the Saints ahead seven minutes in the period. This was Golka's fifth goal of the season. The play for this period became very physical and equal, as Scholastica only managed seven shots on goal and the Vikings only five.
Scholastica received a late penalty for elbowing with only three minutes left in the game, but were able to fight it off, and allow Lawrence with only one shot. The Vikings pulled their goalie with a minute left in the power play and even took a timeout, but nothing would prove effective for the Vikings. The game would end with the Saints winning 2-1.
