PREVIEW: Alumni Weekend Ahead for Women's Basketball

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team wraps up its home stand this weekend with a pair of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) games against the University of Northwestern (Minn.) on Friday and North Central University (Minn.) on Saturday for Alumni Day.

Last Action: The Saints went 1-1 at home last weekend in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play … St. Scholastica took care of Crown College 64-33 on Friday night with Rachel Weyenberg (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) recording a career-high 14 points … Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) also netted 14 points … CSS then fell to the University of Minnesota Morris 68-62 on Saturday … That game featured the matchup of sisters Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) for the Saints and Abby VanKempen for the Cougars … Even though the Saints allowed the most second-half points (45) all season and trailed by 15 in the fourth quarter, they still had a chance to tie it in the final 30 seconds.
 
Alumni Day: The Saints will hold their annual Alumni Day on Saturday with the Alumni game scheduled for 11 a.m. in Reif with a small reception to follow.
 
UMAC Symmetry: This weekend begins the second part of round-robin play around the conference … The Saints currently sit in sixth place in the league, a game behind Martin Luther College … In fact, there are no ties currently in the standings as each team is separated by one game, starting at the top with unbeaten University of Wisconsin-Superior, all the way to the bottom to winless Crown College.
 
Defense Improving: The Saints have the second-best scoring defense in the conference in UMAC games only (57.5 points per game) … CSS also has a positive turnover margin in conference games at +1.13.
 
Free Throw Struggles: The Saints have not shot above 70 percent from the free throw line in the last six games and have only been above 70 percent in three games … However, both opponents this weekend shoot worse from the foul throw line than the Saints as Northwestern is at 62 percent and North Central is at 60 percent … St. Scholastica has also attempted the fewest free throws in the league (239).
