MILWAUKEE, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – After scoring three goals in the third period on Friday night to force overtime and eventually a tie, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell behind by two goals in third period on Saturday to the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) only to score four goals to rally past the Raiders by a 6-4 margin.
Even First Period
The Raiders scored the first goal of the game with over 11 minutes remaining on a Jordan Guth tally.
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) responded moments later for the Saints to tie the contest at 1-1 entering the second period.
Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) was credited with the assist.
Tough Second Period
The Saints took a 2-1 lead less than two minutes into the second period when senior
Brandon Parrone (Peoria, Ariz./Brophy College Prep (Melfort-SJHL) ) scored his first collegiate goal.
Brett Radford (Campbell River, British Columbia/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL)) had the assist.
St. Scholastica maintained its 2-1 lead until there was eight minutes left when the Saints could not get a line change and MSOE eventually tied it up on a Gage Christianson goal. It was Christianson again with four minutes left in the period and on a CSS power-play, recording a short-handed goal to put MSOE in front 3-2. The Raiders added another goal in the final minute to extend the lead to 4-2 at the second intermission.
Here We Go Again
In the third period of Friday night's game, the Saints had 21 shots on goal. That was not the story on Saturday as the Saints only had seven shots on goal in the period, but the MSOE penalties carried over from last night.
CSS got a power-play opportunity five minutes into the period and
Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) cut the margin to one a little over a minute into the man-advantage.
Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) had the assist.
Less than two minutes later and on the next shot on the MSOE net, it was Millin again tying the game at 4-4 with 12 minutes to go.
After the Saints failed to convert on a power-play, they got another, and took the lead with 3:43 remaining as Golka found the net.
Davis Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) and
Connor Faupel (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS (UW-Superior)) had the assists.
St. Scholastica sealed the game in the final minute with another power-play/empty net goal by Radford to make the final 6-4.
