DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – In a showdown of the two teams that shared the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season title last season, the St. Scholastica women's soccer team made two first half goals stand up in a 2-1 victory over the University of Northwestern on Saturday at Saints Field.
Early Offense
After recording only one goal in their previous five games, the Saints made sure to get on the board early as
Taylor Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS ) registered her third goal of the season in the 13
th minute to make it 1-0.
Hannah Zeis (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS ) had the assist.
St. Scholastica extended the lead to 2-0 in the 21
st minute when
Becca Rancour (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS ) headed in her second tally of the season.
Rachel Dixon (Superior, Wis./Superior HS ) and T. Olson were credited with the assists. It remained 2-0 after one half had elapsed. CSS out-shot the Eagles 9-5 in the half.
Northwestern Attempts a Rally
The overall shots would be tighter in the second half and Northwestern would put four balls on goal. One of those four shots resulted in a goal as Kaitlin Meinke hit one over the keeper to make it 2-1.
Saints goalkeeper
Roni Rudolph (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minnesota-Duluth) ) would have to make three saves after that goal in the final 10 minutes to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Rudolph had four saves to earn her second win of the season. Samantha Dewey had six saves for Northwestern.
