LA CROSSE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – Sophomore Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) had a pair of two-run singles to lead the St. Scholastica baseball team past Beloit College (Wis.) 8-1 on Thursday in an elimination game at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

4-Run Fourth Inning
After a quick first three innings, the Saints got things rolling in the top of the fourth. Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) led off with a double. A single and a walk later, the bases were loaded for Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS ), who ripped a double down the right field line to bring in two runs.

Later in the inning with two runners in scoring position, Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) hit a two-run single to bring in Bernsdorf and Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn. /Mankato West HS) to make it 4-0.

Colvard Delivers Again
Beloit pushed a run across in the bottom of the fourth, but the Saints got that run back and more as D. Colvard snuck one thru the left side to bring in Bernsdorf and Wollenzien one more time to make it 6-1.

The Saints added two more runs in the top of the ninth on a Minks sacrifice fly to bring in D. Colvard and Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) also scored on the play due to a throwing error.

Alcoverde Goes the Distance
Junior right-hander Martin Alcoverde (Tucson, Ariz. /Sahuarita HS (Mesabi Range CC)) scattered five hits and did not allow an earned run in the complete game victory. Alcoverde recorded four strikeouts and walked just two. Only two Buccaneer runners touched third base in the game and only four made it two second.

It was the first complete-game victory by a Saints pitcher in a NCAA Regional since Andy Davis defeated the University of St. Thomas in 2011.
