DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team needed just four hits to defeat Carleton College 2-1 on Sunday in non-conference action at Wade Stadium

The Action
After Carleton failed to convert a bases loaded opportunity in the top of the first, Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) led off the game for the Saints with a single. That would be his 200th career hit, becoming the sixth player in program history to hit that mark.

A walk and fly out moved Colvard to third. With two outs, Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS ) singled up the middle to plate Colvard and give the Saints a 1-0 lead. The Knights got another runner to third in the top of the second, but once again failed to capitalize.

In the bottom of the third, Colvard and Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning. The Marolt single would actually be the last hit for the Saints for the day. Later in the inning, Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Colvard and give St. Scholastica a 2-0 lead.

Carleton got on the board in the top of the fourth with a RBI single to make it 2-1. After that, both teams would combine for only one hit the rest of the way as the Saints hung on for the 2-1 victory.

Pitching
Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) went five innings for the Saints, striking out three and scattering five hits to earn the victory. Ben Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn. /Osseo HS), Gino Strebing (Tucson, Ariz./Santa Rita HS (Rainy River CC) ) and Joe Gonrowski (Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS ) combined to pitch four innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and striking out four. Gonrowski earned his first collegiate save.

Top Offensive Performers
A. Colvard was 2-for-4 and scored both runs for the Saints. Jack Atterberry was 3-for-4 to lead the Carleton offense.
