DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team lost a tough 10-inning battle of a first game, but rebounded nicely to split a doubleheader at home against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Tuesday afternoon at Wade Stadium.
Game One: UWSP 3, CSS 1 (F/10)
After a one-two-three first inning for both teams, the Saints managed to score the first run of the game in the second. With two outs, a pair of walks put runners on for
Jake Kuschke (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS ), who doubled down the left field line to score
Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn. /Mankato West HS) and bring
Haydn Lanoue (Rosemount, Minn. /Rosemount HS ) to third. Unfortunately, the Saints could not do any further damage in the inning, giving CSS a 1-0 lead.
The Pointers quickly evened the game at 1-1 in the third, as a walk, stolen base and double to left quickly negated the Saints' lead. The game would remain even at one through nine innings, as starter
Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS ) threw six solid innings for CSS and Ben Servais tossed 6.2 for UW-Stevens Point.
The top of the 10
th would cause trouble for the Saints early, as a leadoff double put a runner in scoring position for the Pointers. Following a flyout, a two-run blast to center field put the visitors up for good, as St. Scholastica was unable to mount a rally in the bottom half of the inning, falling to the Pointers 3-1 in ten innings.
The Saints scored a run on five hits in the contest, while the Pointers managed three runs on eight hits. Drew Spaeth was the winning pitcher, throwing 3.1 shutout innings of relief.
Jake Turner (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) took the loss for the Saints, giving up two runs in four innings of relief. CSS' only hit in the final five hits was an
Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) infield single
The loss snaps a 52-game home winning streak, including 50 straight wins at Wade Stadium. The last loss was a 2010 loss to Bethany Lutheran College in the UMAC Tournament. That same 2010 UMAC Tournament was the last time St. Scholastica played an extra-inning game at Wade Stadium.
Game Two: CSS 12, UWSP 1 (F/7)
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Saints again struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. After loading the bases with one out, a Saints strikeout brought
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) to the plate. He delivered a two-RBI single down the left field line, scoring
Chris Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) and
Riley Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn. /Floodwood HS), both of whom singled previously in the inning.
The Pointers would quickly respond, cutting the St. Scholastica lead in half in the top of the fifth by stringing a pair of singles together with a stolen base. That would prove to be the only run the Saints would allow in the contest.
The CSS bats would catch fire in the sixth, bringing home 10 runs to break the game wide open. The Saints would cause trouble early with patient at bats to load the bases on walks with no outs. Following a pitching change, Marolt then started the RBI parade, bringing home
Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn. /Mankato West HS). A. Colvard then doubled to left to bring home
Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) and Olson, giving CSS a 5-1 lead and runners on second and third with no outs.
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) walked to load the bases again, and
Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS ) delivered a RBI single, scoring Colvard and Marolt to bring the lead to 7-1. Following an out, another walk loaded the bases again, but a fielder's choice would give CSS two outs. Olson stepped to the plate and ripped a two RBI single to push the lead to 9-1 in favor of the home team. The Saints would tack on three more additional unearned runs to close out the inning, giving the Saints a 12-1 lead.
After the Saints scored 10 runs on five hits and five walks, the Pointer were unable to mount any kind of rally in the top of the top of the seventh, and the Saints would take the 12-1 victory by mercy rule.
Jacob Dzubay (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS (Butler) ) recorded the win for CSS, throwing 4.2 innings and giving up just one run on three hits. Hetzel recorded the loss for the Pointers, giving up two runs in 3.1 innings of work.
