DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team defeated the University of Northwestern by final scores of 9-1 and 13-3 in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheader Saturday at Kenwood Field behind a strong offensive showcase.

Game 1: CSS 9, UNW 1 (F/6)
CSS scored two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead on its way to a 9-1 victory in game one.

Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) and Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) accounted for the first two Saints runs of the game on back-to-back RBI hits to put CSS up 2-0 after one inning.

Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) drove in the third CSS run of the game on an error by the Northwestern first baseman. She was followed up by Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS), who smacked an RBI single for the fourth run of the game for the Saints.

After UNW scored a run in the fifth inning, Borgeson and the Saints would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-1 lead.

CSS would put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning when they exploded for four runs. Warren and Borgeson knocked in the first two runs of the inning. They would be followed by a Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) two-RBI double to make the final score 9-1 and put the mercy rule into effect.

Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) got the win for the Saints going six innings allowing one unearned run, while striking out five. Warren and Borgeson both ended the game 3-for-4.

Game 2: CSS 13, UNW 3 (F/5)
St. Scholastica used an eight-run first inning to waltz its way to a 13-3 victory in game two.

In the first inning, the Saints tallied eight total hits on their way to their eight runs, while sending a total of 13 batters to the plate.

The inning was highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Mizera and Johnson scoring three of the eight runs.

The Saints would add two more runs in the second inning on back-to-back home runs by Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) and Mizera to make the score 10-0 after two.

After a Northwestern run in the third inning, CSS would respond with three runs of their own driven in by Schley and Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS). After three innings the Saints led 13-1.

Even a Northwestern two-run home run in the fifth inning was not enough to avoid the mercy rule as CSS took game two by a final score of 13-3.

Mizera finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Schley would also go 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Mizera also picked up the victory in game two, not allowing a hit in three innings.
