ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team traveled across the border Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader conference showdown against the Lumberjills of Northland College. The Saints made sure their bus ride back to Duluth would be a good one as they swept Northland by scores of 10-2 and 14-1.

Game 1: CSS 10, NC 2 (F/6)
The first game of the doubleheader would be very one-sided. St. Scholastica's first run of the game would be a strange one as Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) stole home to get things rolling. Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) followed up a few at bats later with an RBI double to give the Saints a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. Within the next three innings the Saints would score a combined five runs, while only giving up two. The highlight for the Saints within those innings was when Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS), who was on the mound for the Saints in game one, was able to connect for an RBI single to score Warren.

However, the highlight of the game would be much better. Warren, who was already having herself quite a game, managed to blast one over the Northland fence for a three-run home run in the sixth. Mizera would close out the bottom of the sixth, thus enforcing the mercy rule and giving the Saints the win. The 10-2 victory would notch yet another win for Mizera on the year.

Game 2: CSS 14, NC 1 (F/5)
Many Northland fans were hoping for a longer game in the second half of the doubleheader, but the Saints wanted to get home early. This time they cleared the field after five innings, thanks in part to a dominant performance from Warren for the second game in a row. Warren had two hits, drew one walk, scored twice, and knocked in four RBIs for a well-rounded day at the plate.

The scoring started right away in the first inning for CSS as it combined for four runs. Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) to put the Saints on the board. Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) then doubled, knocking in two of her teammates to put CSS up 3-0. Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) then did her part, driving in Logergren with a single. The high-scoring inning was then finally halted by the Lumberjills, but the damage was already done.

The scoring continued for the Saints. They scored three more runs in the second inning, with two of them coming off a home run swing by Warren. As if the game wasn't already blown open after a 7-1 lead just two innings in, the Saints decided to double their score in the third. The seven-run inning was a team effort, as five different Saints recorded RBIs in the slug fest. Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS), Becca Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), Bremer, Warren, and Johnson would be the five Saints producing the runs. The score after three read "14-1" in favor of CSS, which is where it would remain as Schley and her defense shut down the Lumberjills in five innings.

Top Performers
The Saints were led offensively by none other than Warren, who had seven hits on the day. Her seven hits consisted of two home runs and eight RBIs. Mizera and Schley both pitched complete games and each added a mark to their already quite full win column.

Up Next
St. Scholastica will remain in Duluth for the remainder of the week/weekend for a couple of games against both Bethany Lutheran College and Crown College. The doubleheader versus Bethany will be played on Thursday, weather permitting, with first pitch at 3 p.m. on Kenwood Field. They'll get a day off before taking on Crown on Saturday, which will also be played at Kenwood with a start time of 1 p.m.
