DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Sunday to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in its first games at Kenwood Field.
Game 1: UWEC 3, CSS 0
The Saints had three different runners reach third base in the first three innings, but could not capitalize as the Blugolds had just enough offense to take the first game 3-0.
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) advanced to third in the bottom of the first, but that is where she was stranded as the Saints grounded out to end the inning.
The Blugolds got on the board in the top of the second with a leadoff home run over the left field fence. Later in the inning, the Saints got unlucky as Eau Claire attempted to steal third and the throw from the catcher would deflect off the batter's bat and into left field allowing the runner to score and make it 2-0.
Olivia Bretting (Ashland, Wis. /Ashland HS ) advanced to third base with one out in the bottom of the third for the Saints, but would be tagged out on a groundball. Still in the third, CSS had runners at second and third, but would fly out to end the threat.
Eau Claire added insurance in the sixth inning with a squeeze bunt to make it 3-0. St. Scholastica went down in order in the sixth and seventh to end the game 3-0.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) pitched well for the Saints in the defeat, striking out eight and allowing just three hits.
Game 2: UWEC 7, CSS 1
It was one bad inning that did the Saints in in the nightcap. The Blugolds scored six runs in the top of third to break open a scoreless contest en route to a 7-1 victory.
The top of the third saw the Saints commit a pair of errors, which led to five of the six runs being unearned. Three of the six runs were scored on balls that never left the infield.
The Saints got their lone run of the day on a RBI groundout by
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 7-1.
Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) struck out four in the loss for St. Scholastica.
