ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team was outside on Sunday as it split with Bethel University, winning game one 7-0, but falling in the nightcap 4-2 at the University of Northwestern's Reynolds Field softball complex.
Game 1: CSS 7, Bethel 0Junior
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) led the Saints both as a pitcher and as a hitter in the game one victory for the Saints.
CSS scored a pair of runs in the top of the first.
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) led off with a single and then later scored on a Bethel error.
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) had a RBI single, plating
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) to give CSS a 2-0 lead.
That is all Mizera needed as she pitched a complete game shutout, striking out nine, while walking only three.
Olivia Bretting (Ashland, Wis. /Ashland HS ) had a RBI single to score Mizera in the sixth to make it 3-0 Saints.
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) then scored on a double steal to extend the lead to 4-0.
In the seventh, after a
Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) run-scoring double, Mizera capped off her impressive game with a two-run home run to give St. Scholastica the 7-0 victory.
At the plate, Mizera was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Bremer and Johnson also had two hits to lead the CSS 11-hit attack.
Game 2: Bethel 4, CSS 2A three-run home run by Bethel in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the Royals' 4-2 game two victory.
The Saints struck first, batting last in this contest as Mizera continued to swing a hot stick driving in
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0.
Bethel got things going in the top of the fourth. Schley was cruising along for CSS until a one-out single and walk set things up for a Micayla Moore three-run home run to make it 3-1 Royals.
After the Saints stranded a runner on third in the bottom of the fifth, the Royals capitalized on a CSS error to extend the lead 4-1 in the sixth.
Mizera hit another home run in the seventh, but that would be it as the Saints fell 4-2.
The Saints out-hit the Royals 8-5 with Mizera and Borgeson with two hits each. Schley struck out 10, but picked up the loss.
