Notables-CSS out-hit WPU 7-5-Three of CSS' four losses have been by two runs or less
CLERMONT, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team opened its spring trip with a 6-5 loss to unbeaten William Paterson University (N.J.) on Friday night.
The ActionThe Pioneers (10-0) got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The runs were scored on a two-run triple and a CSS error.
The Saints responded in the top of the second as
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) knocked in two runs on a single.
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) also had a RBI single and
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had a two-run double to give St. Scholastica a 5-3 lead.
William Paterson tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the third with a two-out, two-run double. The Pioneers then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when they were able to get a leadoff double and that runner later scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-5.
The Saints were able to get the tying run to second in the top of the seventh, but that is where it was stranded as CSS fell 6-5.
PitchingChrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) picked up the loss for the Saints as she struck out four in six innings. Allison Podmajersky struck out eight in 5.2 innings to earn the victory in relief.
Top Offensive PerformersBremer was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Five other Saints recorded hits. Kim Fryer had two of William Paterson's five hits.
Up NextThe Saints (3-4) will face Amherst College (Mass.) and Carthage College (Wis.) tomorrow. The Amherst game begins at 9 a.m. (ET), while the Carthage game is at 11 a.m. (ET).
