AUBURNDALE, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday to No. 8 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Game 1: UWW 3, CSS 1The Warhawks broke a 1-1 tie with runs in the eighth and ninth to down the Saints 3-1.
Whitewater got on the board by leading off the top of the third with a home run. It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh.
That is when
Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS ) led off the inning with a double. His brother,
Riley Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn. /Floodwood HS), then brought him in with a single down the line to tie the game at 1-1. A pair of walks loaded the bases with one out. CSS would get a run out forced out at the plate and then strikeout as the game went to the eighth tied at 1-1.
The Warhawks led off the eighth with a walk and stolen base. That runner eventually came in to score on a single as Whitewater regained the lead 2-1. UWW then led off the ninth with a triple and followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the margin to 3-1.
Chris Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) doubled to leadoff the bottom of the ninth, but that is all the Saints had for offense in the inning as it fell 3-1.
Martin Alcoverde (Tucson, Ariz. /Sahuarita HS (Mesabi Range CC)) allowed one run in six innings and struck out eight in the no decision.
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and Olson each had two hits in St. Scholastica's seven-hit attack.
Game 2: UWW 9, CSS 2The Saints managed only four hits, while Whitewater belted 16, including another home run in a 9-2 victory to complete the sweep.
The lone bright spot for the Saints was A. Colvard, who was 3-for-4 and scored both of CSS' runs. T. Bernsdorf had a sacrifice fly.
It was a 5-2 game until the Warhawks hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away.
