CLERMONT, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team suffered a pair of defeats to Amherst College (Mass.) and Carthage College (Wis.) on Saturday.
Amherst 4, CSS 1Amherst scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past the Saints 4-1 to open play on Saturday.
After the Saints left the bases loaded in the top of the first, neither offense got anything going until the sixth inning. CSS loaded the bases again in the top of the sixth and were able to get a run across when
Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored on a
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) groundout.
Amherst would get three straight hits to open the bottom of the sixth to get one run in and then the fourth batter hit a sacrifice fly to give Amherst a 2-1 lead. Amherst added two more runs in the frame to make it 4-1.
The Saints went down in order in the top of the seventh as it fell 4-1.
Kohl picked up the loss in relief, while
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) struck out four in five innings to get the no decision. Five different Saints had hits in the loss.
Carthage 12, CSS 4 (F/5)Carthage scored 11 runs between the fourth and fifth innings to win by mercy rule 12-4 in five innings.
After the Saints stranded the bases loaded in the top of the second, the Lady Reds hit a solo home run in the bottom frame to take a 1-0 lead.
St. Scholastica came back in the top of the third with a RBI double by
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) to bring in
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS). Mizera later scored in the inning on an error to give CSS a 2-1 lead.
It remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Reds put seven runs on the board. CSS committed two errors, walked in a run, had a passed ball score run and had a hit-by-pitch bring in another run.
The Saints got two runs back in the top of the fifth when a
Jena O'Byrne (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville HS) walk forced in a run and
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) scored on a
Jill Rosby (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS ) fielder's choice to make it 8-4.
However, Carthage would get four runs by not recording a hit in the bottom frame to end the game early 12-4.
McGuiness picked up the loss, striking out three in 4.2 innings. MaKenzie Walker scattered six hits in five innings to earn the win.
The Saints actually out-hit the Lady Reds 6-5 with McGuiness recorded two of the six hits.
