ROCHESTER, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team won its first two games of the season under first-year head coach Rilee Dawson at the Rochester Dome Tournament on Saturday defeating UW-Stevens Point 7-0, and Coe College (Iowa) 5-4.

CSS 7, UW-Stevens Point 0
St. Scholastica defeated UW-Stevens Point by a final score of 7-0 game one of the Rochester Dome Tournament behind a six run fourth inning and a seven inning shutout by Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS).

The game stood scoreless before the fourth inning.

St. Scholastica's only real threat before the fourth inning came in the bottom of the second when it managed to load the bases with no outs. Unfortunately for the Saints, two strikeouts and a pop out ended the threat with CSS unable to capitalize.

The Saints sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning. The Saints had a total of six hits in the inning and were also helped by an error, a walk, and a wild pitch by UWSP.

The inning was highlighted by a Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) two-RBI ground rule double that scored Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) and Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS), which was followed by an Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) two-RBI single that scored Dailey and Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) that scored the sixth and final run for the Saints.

CSS added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Schley smacked a ground rule double that scored Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) for the seventh CSS run of the game.

The Saints would take the game by a final score of 7-0 with Schley leading the way going 3-for-3 with three RBIs on the day while Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) finished the day 2-for-4.

Mizera allowed only four hits and struck out four in the shutout.

CSS 5, Coe 4
CSS edged out Coe College by a 5-4 margin after taking and holding onto a late inning lead for the win.

Coe went up early in the bottom of the first inning scratching across one run to lead 1-0 after one.

The Saints would not score until the top of the third inning when they rattled off three runs to take a 3-1 lead in a four-hit inning that included doubles by Becca Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS), and Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS).

The CSS lead would be short lived, however, as it would go on to give up a three spot in the bottom frame of the third to go back down by a run at 4-3.

That score would stick until the top of the fifth when Schley helped her own cause by cracking a two-out, two-RBI double that propelled CSS back in front to a 5-4 lead going into the sixth.

CSS was able to hold onto the one run lead the rest of the way as it played out to a 5-4 tight victory to improve to 2-0 in the first day of the regular season.

Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) went 4-for-4 in this game, while Warren finished the game 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

Along with her two-run double, Schley also pitched a complete game allowing just four hits to get the win in her first collegiate start for the Saints.

Up Next
The Saints (2-0) continue their weekend in Rochester with two games tomorrow against UW-La Crosse at 10 a.m. and Buena Vista University (Iowa) at noon.
